These are referred to as cardiovascular risk factors. The interesting thing about the metabolic syndrome is that five of these cardiovascular risk factors are seen together more often than would be expected by chance—as though they are caused by a similar underlying problem.

People with the metabolic syndrome are more likely to develop several other diseases, including higher risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and a liver problem called fatty liver disease.

Technically, a z-score is the number of standard deviations from the mean a particular value is. There are corresponding percentiles that are meaningful: The MetS z-score was not calculated directly similar to other z-scores BMI z-scores used for children, etc.

Rather, it was derived from a type of analysis called a confirmatory factor analysis that examines how the various components of MetS obesity, blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar are correlated with one another. This score behaves like a z-score, in that it has a normal distribution with mean 0 and standard deviation equals 1.

It was derived from a nationally representative sample of the U. The score requires information regarding the five components of the metabolic syndrome. These are systolic blood pressure the upper number of the two numbers given in a blood pressure , triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, glucose or blood sugar , and a measure of weight status. The most common means of measuring weight status is body mass index, which is calculated from height and weight. Body weight status can also be measured from waist circumference.

Either of these measures of body weight status can be used in calculating a metabolic syndrome severity score. The measurements that are part of the metabolic syndrome are all done routinely at visits to the doctor. Your score tells you where your current metabolic syndrome status is compared to others in the US population. If your score is below zero, you have a lower degree of metabolic syndrome than the average US adult; if your score is very close to 0, then you have an average degree of metabolic syndrome.

But higher scores above 0 are associated with more risk for future disease, particularly scores above 1 which is higher than At this point we do not have detailed information on risk for CVD and diabetes based on your score, but we are working on having this. Yes, the good news is that a major influence of metabolic syndrome is lifestyle—such as food choices and exercise—and making changes in your lifestyle can lower your metabolic syndrome score.

Use exact values.

This is the set of third differences of f1x2. How does that relate to your guess? What shape does the set of points give? How does that relate to your 5p guess? This is the set of fourth differences of f1x2.

Plot the points values in part b. This is the set of second differences of f1x2. Plot the points found? What happened in part f? What func- puted the differences? This package includes MyLab Math.

By combining trusted author content with digital tools and a flexible platform, MyLab personalizes the learning experience and improves results for each student. Learn more about MyLab Math. Series This product is part of the following series.

Preface Preface is available for download in PDF format.

Page references are included for easy review. Now Work "Are You Prepared? These problems appear at the start of each exercise set.

Now Work problems —many examples refer to a related problem in the exercise set, which are marked by a yellow pencil icon. If students get stuck while doing their homework, they can look for the closest Now Work problem and refer back to the related example.

These exercises are assignable in MyLab Math. This feature is referenced from the Preparing for This Section feature. Answers appear at the end of the section.

These problems may also require students to utilize skills learned in previous sections, helping them to see how concepts are tied together. They support class discussion, verbalization of mathematical ideas, and writing and research projects. By directing students into essential material, students can focus and retain the most important concepts.

These notes help increase the success of your students in any course structure. They combine problems from previous chapters, providing an ongoing cumulative review. Reach every student with MyLab Deliver trusted content: You deserve teaching materials that meet your own high standards for your course. Empower each learner: Each student learns at a different pace.

Personalized learning pinpoints the precise areas where each student needs practice, giving all students the support they need — when and where they need it — to be successful. The figures are included in MyLab Math as both a teaching and an assignable learning tool. From a quick quiz, a personalized, just-in-time review assignment is generated for each student, allowing them to refresh forgotten concepts.

This way, students can focus on just the topics they have not yet mastered. Teach your course your way: Your course is unique. Each assignment, handpicked by the author to align with this text, includes a thoughtful mix of question types e. Improve student results: When you teach with MyLab, student performance improves.
